PMOS mainly affects ovulation, causing irregular or absent egg release . However, in some women it can also affect egg quality, especially when insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, or obesity are present .

Egg quality is often normal, especially in younger women, but factors like insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, and inflammation can sometimes affect egg quality as well.

For me understanding PCOS made me realise people oversimplify it into just irregular ovulation. My doctor Dr Jay Mehta explained to me that PCOS mainly affects ovulation, but depending on the person and severity it can sometimes affect egg quality too so they don't always get looked at as completely separate things!!!

While polycystic ovary syndrome largely interferes with the process of ovulation, it may affect egg quality in some patients. The characteristic feature of PCOS is irregular or lack of ovulation due to hormones imbalance, thus making natural conception harder. Nevertheless, it is not all women with PCOS who have low-quality eggs. Many women suffering from PCOS have good ovarian reserves and produce plenty of eggs, however, issues like insulin resistance, obesity, inflammatory processes, and age can negatively impact maturation of the eggs as well as their quality. In young and properly managed PCOS patients, egg quality is usually no different than the one in women who do not have PCOS. Leading a healthy life-style, controlling weight, dealing with insulin resistance, and undergoing adequate treatment can help ovulation as well as conception greatly. If you have PCOS and are trying to get pregnant, you can consult a fertility specialist to find out what treatment is best for you.
