Do women with HIV face additional risks during fertility treatments compared to those without the virus?
Women with HIV may need some additional planning and monitoring during fertility treatments, but many are able to pursue fertility options successfully with proper medical care. The focus is usually on controlling the virus, reducing transmission risks, and choosing the safest treatment approach. It can feel worrying, but with specialised support many women have positive outcomes.
From what I've learned, women with well-controlled HIV can often go through fertility treatment with outcomes that are quite similar to women without HIV. The biggest differences seem to be around careful monitoring, medication management and reducing the risk of transmission to a partner or baby. I remember being surprised by how much of the discussion focused on viral load and overall health rather than the diagnosis alone. Has anyone here gone through IVF or IUI with HIV and been told their treatment plan needed to be modified?
My best friend is living with HIV and went through fertility treatment a couple of years ago. I remember she was really worried about the risks at first, but her fertility specialist worked closely with her HIV doctor throughout the process. She was told that as long as the virus was well controlled with an undetectable viral load and she stayed on her treatment, the risks were much lower than she had imagined. She was monitored a bit more closely than most patients, but thankfully everything went smoothly for her.
I've been wondering about this too because i don't see many ppl talk about HIV and fertility treatment. I know IVF is still possible, but i've always been curious if the treatment or monitoring is any different compared to someone without HIV. Would really like to hear from anyone who's been thru it.
