Testicular Microlithiasis

GET IN TOUCH ON

Today, let’s discuss an unexpected condition you may stumble upon during a routine health check-up

Testicular Microlithiasis.

To put it simply, it’s a condition primarily detected via a radiological diagnosis, like an ultrasound of the scrotum.

In this article you will understand, what is this condition, will it be the reason for infertility or cancer? its causes & what you need to do if you are in this situation.

Understanding Testicular Microlithiasis

As you move the ultrasound probe over the testes, instead of observing a plain canvas of normal testicular architecture, you find it dotted with small spots.

This unusual sight is what we call Testicular Microlithiasis. The ‘micro’ in microlithiasis indicates ‘tiny’, and ‘lithiasis’ denotes ‘stones’. So, essentially, the condition refers to tiny calcium deposits or “stones” within the testes.

Does it Lead to Cancer?

Now, as you grapple with this unforeseen diagnosis, your mind might spiral into a whirlpool of questions.

The most haunting question would likely be, “Is this going to cause me testicular cancer?”

This query is valid and natural, considering the vital role the testes play in male reproductive health. But are these fears justified?

Let’s explore.

There is no proven risk that testicular microlithiasis could segue into cancer. Normally, microlithiasis presents itself as dispersed speckles across the testis.

But if the microlithiasis appears concentrated at one particular spot, it might – and note, we emphasize ‘might’ – signal an early sign of testicular malignancy.

However, this correlation is not definitive; it’s akin to saying every thundercloud results in a storm, which we know isn’t true.

Does it Lead to Infertility?

Another haunting question people usually ask is “Will this condition turn me infertile?”

The condition is seen in approximately 8 – 10 % of males with severe oligoasthenozoospermia, a condition characterized by low sperm count and poor sperm movement.

However, it’s important to underline that there’s no proven association between testicular microlithiasis and infertility. It’s essential to remember that these are not definitive statistics, and there are numerous other factors that can impact fertility.

It’s like blaming the rusting of a car solely on rain, discounting other factors like time, exposure, and maintenance.

Why Does Testicular Microlithiasis Happen?

The exact cause of testicular microlithiasis remains shrouded in mystery.

It’s suspected that microlithiasis predominantly occurs due to defective spermatogenesis (i.e., defective sperm production), or perhaps due to previous viral infections.

However, these are only theories at this stage. They’re like pieces of a puzzle, giving some clue, but the full picture is yet to emerge.

Ultrasound of Testicular Microlithiasis

When you observe an ultrasound of a testis with microlithiasis (Ultrasound is shown in the video above), you’ll notice small white spots distributed uniformly across the entire region of the testis.

Additionally, another sign, testicular fibrosis, characterized by thin white bands running through the testis, is also commonly associated with microlithiasis.
