Role of Antioxidant in Male Fertility
Male infertility is one of the most common health conditions in males across the globe, affecting 9% of men. As a leading Infertility Clinic, a lot of patients come to us looking for medications that can help them with their infertility.
There is a general belief that a few medications, especially Anti-oxidants, can help cure male infertility.
But,
Is it really the case? Can Antioxidants treat male infertility?
Well, to get a clear idea, it’s important to understand the conditions that cause male infertility.
In this blog, we will take a look at these conditions and whether Antioxidants can help you.
So let’s begin.
Different Male Infertility Test Results and the Effect of Antioxidants on Them
-
Normal test
The normal test results indicate there is no issue with your semen. As per WHO’s research, if in the semen volume of 1.5 mL, sperm concentration is 15 million/mL, sperm total motility is 40%, and sperm with a normal morphology is 4%, the test is considered normal.
If you cannot impregnate your partner, but your semen analysis results are normal, taking antioxidants serves no purpose.
-
Azoospermia
If your sperm count is zero, the condition is known as Azoospermia. If you have Azoospermia, you should know that taking Anti-oxidant will not help anyhow.
There are a lot of health practitioners that take advantage of this and recommend some medications for quick bucks. This is medically unethical and morally wrong.
No Antioxidant can help you if you are dealing with Azoospermia. Instead, you should consult a reliable infertility specialist for further course of action. Do not get drawn into the emotions; rather, make an informed decision.
-
Low Motility rate
If your Semen analysis test reveals that you have a very Low Motility rate ( a rat that shows the movement of sperms), Anti-oxidants have virtually zero benefits.
So even if your sperm count is high, but your motility rate is low, any medication is useless.
-
Oligospermia
Oligospermia is a condition where a patient’s sperm count is below 15 million sperms/ml.
Let’s understand the effect of antioxidants in this condition. We can classify the patients into three categories to understand the effect:
1. Patients with a sperm count below 5 Million :
If your sperm count is below 5 million, Antioxidants will not work. No matter how many antioxidant medicines you take, they will have zero benefits.
2. Patients with sperm count between 5 to 10 million :
If your sperm count is between 5 to 10 million, then Antioxidants won’t work.
3. Patients with sperm count between 10 to 15 million :
In this case, antioxidants might positively affect the patient. But there is no surety of the same.

So What’s the Conclusion?
Let’s understand it this way. If you have a headache but you are taking medication for the infection, it’s useless. So why waste time and resources on taking useless medicines? It’s always better to consult with a certified infertility clinic.
So if you are dealing with infertility and a health practitioner prescribes some medications, please ask to provide a written guarantee about the impact of the medication. Moreover, if you have a sperm count between 10 to 15 million/ml, it is better to adopt a healthy lifestyle and diet instead of antioxidants. It can deliver better results.
