Infertility is a common issue that impacts thousands of couples in India. There are a plethora of reasons that cause infertility in couples.
Being a leading infertility specialist in Mumbai, a lot of couples come to us with one common complaint, “Can too much sperm coming out of the vagina during sex be the cause of their infertility?
So we decided to develop a detailed explanation and answer to this question. Let’s understand in detail.
Structure of Vagina and Uterus

In every female, the Uterus is located a little bit higher on the back side of the vagina
When the male partner’s penis enters the vagina, the semen is discharged into the vagina. The semen goes and gets deposited in the rear end of the vagina. This region is known as the posterior fornix.
When a female partner gets up after the sex, almost 75-80% of the semen leaks out of the vagina. This is a normal phenomenon.
But a common question that comes to the mind of couples is that 80% of the sperm gets wasted in this way.
So is pregnancy possible with the remaining 20 to 25% of the semen?
When the semen is discharged, it’s in the form of a coagulum and not liquid. In this, while discharged, the percentage of sperm is below 5%.
Now whichever sperms are motile (rapid progressive sperms) start moving towards the Uterus immediately. They cross the barrier called the cervical plug and go inside.
That’s why if one egg is released from the female, it can be enough for conception. But for males, the sperm concentration should be 15 million/ml. That’s 1.5 crore sperm!
The reason is 80% of the sperm comes out, and 10% dies somehow. So just a fraction of that 15 million sperm/ml survives that can travel into the Uterus.
Although it takes just 1 sperm cell and one egg for fertilization, many sperm cells are wasted.
So that’s why the sperm concentration should be more than 15 million sperm/ml. This number is a very important landmark in male infertility.
