Sometimes, when patients get their Semen analysis report, they observe that the number of PUS cells is higher in the Semen.
So what is the reason behind the higher number of Pus cells?
How can it impact a patient’s ability to conceive naturally?
In this blog, we will address these issues and help you better understand Pus cells in Semen. Let’s begin.
PUS Cells in the Semen
The normal level of Pus cells in a Semen report is between 1 to 5. If it’s 15, 20 or 30, it’s considered an abnormal report.
Many patients think that if they have more Pus cells in their Semen, they have some sort of infection.
They feel taking antibiotics will help them get rid of those Pus cells.
But it’s not that simple. Numerous reasons can lead to higher Pus cells in the Semen.

What are the reasons for the higher number of PUS Cells in Semen?
Let’s check them out one by one:
- Collection Error :
This is the most common issue that leads to a higher number of Pus cells.
When a patient’s foreskin of the penis is in an unhygienic condition, it causes infection in that region.
So when they give their Semen for analysis, some Pus cells from these infected areas enter the Semen. Thus, more Pus Cells are observed in the Semen analysis report.
So what’s the solution?
It’s very simple, regularly clean your foreskin. If you don’t know how to clean it, consult your doctor.
He/she will give you betadine solution, a cleansing agent. Use it to clean your penis. Once done, wait for 2 to 3 hours and then give this test once again.
In almost 85% of patients, Collection Error is the reason for a higher number of Pus cells. So if you give your Semen sample after cleaning your penis, there is a strong probability that the number of Pus cells in your report will decrease significantly.
Moreover, if everything else with your sperm report is normal and you still have a higher number of Pus cells in the report, it’s 100% a Collection Error.
But what if the Semen report after cleaning the foreskin shows a higher number of PUS cells again?
Well, in that case, you will have to give a Semen culture test in a laboratory, recommended by your doctor. Based on that report, your doctor will decide which antibiotics will be the right solution for you.
