Causes of Low Sperm Count
Low sperm count is a serious condition related to male infertility and there are many causes of low sperm count. The causes that may lead you to low sperm count are:
Medical Factors
- Varicocele – It is a condition in which you will experience swelling in the veins inside your scrotum. It also results in reducing sperm quality.
- Infection – Some infections may affect your sperm production and further result in low sperm count. It also blocks the sperm ducts and obstructs the passage of the sperms. These infections are caused due to inflammation in your testicles or sexually transmitted infections like HIV.
- Unbalanced testicles – In some rare cases, one or both of your testicles fails to drop from the abdomen to the sac. This condition results in reduced fertility and low sperm count among men.
- Hormonal imbalances – Hormones produced by your pituitary gland and testes are very much important for the production of sperms. However, any type of imbalance in these hormones may result in low sperm count or production.
- Defects in the sperm ducts – The sperm ducts are responsible for carrying the sperms from the testicles. Sometimes your sperm ducts or tubules may get blocked due to an infection or other causes. This may also include any injury from a past surgery or abnormal development.
However, these blockages may occur at any time in your testicles, in the epididymis, or the sperm ducts.
Environmental Conditions
Low sperm count may also occur due to changes in the environment or unsuitable environmental factors. Here are some of the factors mentioned below:
- Industrial chemicals – Chemicals like benzenes, toluene, xylene, herbicides, pesticides, etc; may result in low sperm counts.
- Radiation effects – If you’re exposed to such radiations every day, then it may slowly reduce your sperm count. It can take several years for your sperm count to become normal. However, the high intensity of these radiations may result in a permanent reduction of sperm production.
- Overheating the testicles – If you’re exposed to excessive warm temperatures or an environment then it may reduce your sperm count. For example, if you are taking hot tubs and saunas frequently, then it will have a serious effect on your sperm count.
Also, if you wear tight clothes for a longer time, it will increase the temperature of your scrotum and may result in low sperm production.
Lifestyle Factors
Other lifestyle factors may also lead you to a low sperm count. Here are some of the factors mentioned below:
- Using the drugs that reduce your testosterone levels.
- Consumption of alcohol
- Smoking
- High-stress levels
- Lack of exercise
- Following an unhealthy diet.
- Depression
